Hi Philip I was wondering what the difference was between osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists?
I am asked this question several times a week, if not several times a day so I think it’s worth while clarifying the subject. There are many differences between the modalities, ranging from their philosophies to their technique approaches. Chiropractors believe that all dysfunction comes from malalignment of the spine, they aim to “straighten” the spine generally by manipulation or high velocity thrust techniques. Physiotherapists have much more a Western medicine type model in which they treat the specific joint or muscle that seems to be giving the patient pain. They may use a range of machines; from ultrasounds, TENS to laser. They may perform some soft tissue work or maybe just supervise some specific exercises for you to do. Every practitioner is different.
Osteopaths take on a more holistic approach to the body where structure must be in balance with function. We find that dysfunction can be caused not only by stressed joints but by the muscles, ligaments, fascia and disturbances to circulation and lymphatic vessels. Osteopaths use gentle, non-invasive hands on treatment including soft tissue release, stretching, joint and muscle manipulation to restore the body’s balance. Osteopaths give advice on posture, work and sleeping positions and can prescribe specific exercises to help the healing process. I hope this clears up some of the confusion!
